Pasintmonate, Chuck Smith organizis spektadon de La Universala Lingvo en berlina kinejo. Estis la germana premiero de mia dokumentfilmo pri Esperanto. Ĉar mi ne estus tie ĉe la evento, Chuck petis min verki enkondukon, kiun li povas legi antaŭ la filmo. Mi estis okupita tiutage kaj ne havis multe da tempo, do mi simple rapide verkis ion. Mi verŝajne similas al multaj homoj pro tio, ke kiam mi ne tro multe pensas pri kio mi diras aŭ verkas, kelkfoje surprize sincera sento eliras. Ĉi-kaze, mi verkis: "Mi ne estas esperantisto, sed mi multe admiras la esperantan movadon kaj estas tre honorita kaj ekscitita havi ĉi tiun rilaton. Dum pli ol 100 jaroj, esperantistoj strebadas plibonigi la mondon, kaj mi multege respektas ilian esperon, praktikecon, paciencon, kaj ŝaton por homoj." Mi ne pensis pri tio tiel rekte antaŭe, sed tio vere estas aŭtentika sento por mi; tio estis mia ĉefa kialo por krei La Universalan Lingvon kaj daŭre inspiras miajn klopodojn por disvastigi la filmon. Ĉi tiu blogo estas parto de tiu klopodo, kaj mi esperas, ke vi ĝuos ĝin. Mi afiŝos novaĵojn kaj fotojn ĉi tie pli malpli ĉiusemajne, kaj espereble ni ankaŭ havos gastajn kontribuaĵojn de tempo al tempo. Amike!
Last month, Chuck Smith organized a screening of The Universal Language in Berlin. It was the German premier of my documentary film about Esperanto. Because I wasn’t going to be there at the event, Chuck asked me to write an introduction that he could read before the film screened. I was busy that day and didn’t have a lot of time, so I just dashed something off. I’m probably like most people in that when I don’t think too much about what I’m saying or writing, sometimes a surprisingly sincere sentiment will come out. In this case, I wrote: “I’m not an Esperanto speaker, but I greatly admire the Esperanto movement and am honored and thrilled to have this association. For more than 100 years, Esperanto speakers have been trying to make the world a better place, and I have tremendous respect their hopefulness, pragmatism, patience, and fondness for people.” I hadn’t quite thought of it in those straightforward terms before, but it really is a true feeling for me; this was my primary impulse in making The Universal Language and continues to inspire my efforts to get the film out there. This blog is part of that effort, and I hope you’ll enjoy it. I’ll be posting news and photos and thoughts here every week or so, and hopefully we’ll also have guest contributors from time to time.
